Repair of Farnborough War Memorial

Farnborough War Memorial

The Farnborough Village Society extends most hearty thanks to all who have supported the recent restoration and improvement project, in so many ways.  Without this support it would not have been possible.

There will be a Service of Dedication at St. Giles Church at 11 am on 11th May 2008 for the new plaques commemorating those from Farnborough who died in the Second World War.

To help in making this a fitting ceremony we require the names and addresses of relatives of the undermentioned so that we can send them an invitation.  If you are able to provide any of this information please contact either of the following:

F.V.S. War Memorial Fund

Although the Memorial is located within St. Giles’ Churchyard, it does not belong to the Church it belongs to the people of Farnborough.

The land was given by the Lubbock family, and the memorial was paid for by donations from grateful parishioners and others.

The Farnborough War Memorial was built in 1922 and is dedicated to the men of Farnborough who died in the First World War and it must be kept and preserved in their name by the good folk of Farnborough.

In addition to repairs and refurbishment, it is now proposed to have the names of those from Farnborough who died during the Second World War inscribed in stone attached to the memorial.

Farnborough Village Society, acting as Bankers, has formed a War Memorial Committee, which has taken full responsibility for this project, with Sue Ellis as Chairperson.  A general appeal for help in raising the necessary funds is in place and grants from various organisations have been sought.   We are sure the good folk of Farnborough will rally to the cause, as did our brave lads in days past.

For further information contact Sue Ellis on 07715 860504.

Donations of any size to Sue Ellis, 60 Gladstone Road,

Farnborough, Orpington Kent BR6 7DY.

Please make cheques payable to F.V.S. War Memorial Fund.

Farnborough War Memorial    Final Report 30th October 2007

The Farnborough Village Society War Memorial Committee is pleased to advise everyone that the refurbishment of the War Memorial, the repainting of details of those from Farnborough who died in WW1 and the addition of engraved plaques with details of those from Farnborough who died during WW2, has now been completed.

This undertaking was made possible by the generous support, both financial and physical, and the encouragement we received from the people of Farnborough currently resident and also from those businesses, organizations and friends, associated with our village.

Without this support it would not have happened and we extend our grateful thanks to you all.

We also thank Burslem Stone Masons for their skilled workmanship and patient dedication to detail, enabling the people of Farnborough to have a War Memorial of which we can be proud.

There will be an official Dedication Service at the Memorial in May 2008 when all will be welcome to attend. Further details will be available shortly.

If anyone knows the names and addresses of relatives of those inscribed on the memorial please let us know, as we wish to inform them of the additional name plaques and the Dedication Service.

We are pleased to say that the War Memorial Fund has been able to meet all the expenses so far.  There are still a few ongoing jobs that will always need attention, such as removal of vegetation from the structure, re-pointing of wall joints and keeping the planted areas tidy.  We are, therefore, keeping the Fund open to ensure that the Memorial stays in good condition for generations to come, and donations will always be gratefully accepted.  STOP PRESS : War Memorials Trust have granted us £1,250.00.

Come and visit the beautiful Churchyard of St. Giles the Abbot in Farnborough and give thanks for all who gave their lives in the fight for freedom in both World Wars.  There are many seats where you can sit and enjoy the views of the Garden of England that surrounds OUR VILLAGE.
